In 2013, 4,735 individuals were killed in pedestrian accidents involving motor vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourage all pedestrians to practice safety precautions to avoid an accident such as wearing reflective clothing, walking in well-lit areas, and utilizing crosswalks and sidewalks when available. Despite following all safety precautions, a pedestrian could be injured or killed in a pedestrian accident due to the negligence of motorists. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, and distracted driving are a few examples of negligent driving that inflict injury and death upon others.
